I will agree with you that many talk like God told them that He hates divorce particularly more than He hates unrepentant meanness within marriage and so whichever party in the marriage is the recipient of meanness has no other choice but to suffer silently for God's glory without ruining the reputation of that spouse in the christian community. That kind of talk can only further enable those who are mean and deny adequate help even in the form of words of compassion to the one who actualy suffers. Anytime a counselor disregards the state of a relationship to preserve a marriage, that simply means the counselor either misunderstands what God wants for christian marriage or he or she is simply an inept counselor. Eitherway, counselor accomplishes two things 1) deny help 2) validate and enable the harsh behavior.

Divorce though is a weighty matter, ut should not be between the only two choices namely divorce or silently enable. The Word has so much more wisdom for every situation to equip everyone. I pray more people step up especially in churches where they talk about headship and submission so that they make sure it does not become the perfect place to hide abuse.
Amalahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12583171069406401543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203426020873810365.post-83390644679772557642019-09-14T07:13:47.503-06:002019-09-14T07:13:47.503-06:00Always appreciate your quick reviews and reading l...Always appreciate your quick reviews and reading lists! If you are looking for a good little theology book that makes you think, I have been studying 1689 covenant federalism and the nuances between Reformed Presbyterian and Reformed Baptist covenant theologies. I just finished "The Distinctiveness of Baptist Covenant Theology: A Comparison between 17th-Century Particular Baptist & Paedobaptist Federalism" by Pascal Denault and it is a very intriguing book. It is deep but short which makes it pretty accessible for its topic. All earthly relationships including marriage is meant to make us long for heaven, I would also say. Sometimes, both aspects are present in the same relationship as we are all meant for there and not here as we were created to be satisfied in Christ and Him alone. :-)Amalahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12583171069406401543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203426020873810365.post-62416794124593131142016-08-10T09:20:28.174-06:002016-08-10T09:20:28.174-06:00Thank you Holly! This is an area I have been studying for some time and while I do agree there is certainly error and excess in the charismatic movement (and many of the authors in the book agreed with this) that in no way proves that it's completely wrong. I disagree with you on a number of things you said and am sorry you have such a negative viewpoint. We both think we know what we believe, but in the end we each stand before God. I base my beliefs on what I see in Scripture, but so do you. We'll have to agree to disagree so let's not accuse one another of being proud or question others experience or intellectualism. Amelia Coburnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16257726353070945795noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6203426020873810365.post-24881480560683445522016-02-05T12:56:53.610-07:002016-02-05T12:56:53.610-07:00Amelia,
The first sentence of Amazon's book d...Amelia,

The first sentence of Amazon's book description says it all and shows that these authors in no way interacted with or understood the point of Strange Fire:

"This is an anthology of 35 essays by 26 authors of the Pentecostal, Charismatic, and Third Wave movements or non-cessationists of traditional denominations responding to John F. MacArthur's Strange Fire or cessationism and the abuse of the charismata in general."

Third Wave? Really?

The whole point of the Strange Fire conference and book was to denounce the abuses of Charismatic theology and ask "cautious but open" theologians to join them in denouncing these abuses. Every abuse and aberration of Charismatic theology -- Vineyard, New Apostolic Reformation, etc. -- is embodied in all its manipulative glory in the Third Wave movement. John MacArthur and others were calling Charismatics to address these abuses. What did his opponents do? They doubled-down on those abuses by inviting Third Wave proponents to write a book with them! That demonstrates that Charismatics have NO interest in addressing the problems within their movement and fully support the spiritual manipulation of Christ's sheep. That is disgusting.

Furthermore, as a Pentecostal for 21 years of my life, I notice that your understanding of Pentecostalism demonstrates a naivete. The system is unbiblical, legalistic, and damaging the development of true biblical spirituality. As someone with much more experience than you in this area, my only counsel is to flee. You think you know what they believe, but you don't. I implore you in love to take my advice.

The run-of-the-mill "God told me" spirituality of the average evangelical church (whether they claim to be charismatic or not) is no less dangerous than Third Wave or Pentecostalism. The reliance on direct divine communication dulls discernment and leads people into deadly error.

The list of contributors to this book has several dangerous wolves on it. When a guy like Sam Storms decides to collaborate with the J. Lee Gradys of the world, he has lost all credibility.

Finally, the arrogance of the title, "Strangers to Fire", is telling. Again, as a long-time Pentecostal, that is precisely the attitude, i.e. "We have an experience and you don't." Or, as the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, George Wood, once wrote: "We all have had experiences. Your experience is that you have not had one." Are those words of unity? Or words to belittle what Charismatics see as "second-level" Christians? THAT is what the title of this book implies, something which I think you failed to see. Is John MacArthur a second-level Christian? Al Mohler? Phil Johnson? Ligon Duncan? John Calvin? Charles Spurgeon? Please think about that.

Thanks.Robert Andrejczykhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02370938277209661657noreply@blogger.com
